Dedication

This blog is dedicated to John Horse and the Black Seminoles. Most people are familiar with the underground railroad and the role of Canada as a destination for freedom for Southern slaves. But before there was Canada, there was Spanish Florida. Those slaves who escaped to Florida found a home among the Seminole people and were known as Black Seminoles. One of their most famous leaders was John Horse.

Throughout the 19th century, in the belly of the beast and against impossible odds, John Horse and the Black Seminoles fought for their freedom and dignity.

It is in their memory and spirit that this Journal is dedicated.
